2020 Music Camp Videos and Slide Shows
Because of COVID-19, the Sing the World Green 2020 summer camp was virtual. Our virtual choir concert consisted of 4 different videos, each showcasing one of the songs we learned. You can also view them from our Sing the World Green YouTube channel. Enjoy!
1. Nature Baby One of the goals of my camps is to give children the opportunity to connect with nature. Nature is healing, inspiring, and beautiful! A connection with nature must be present before any kind of Earth service work can have any real impact or meaning for the individual. We spent Wednesday at Croke Reservoir in Northglenn. There was so much play and laughter! This day of unstructured nature exploration was a camp highlight. Also, as you will see in the slideshow, each camper found natural objects to make "nature art." One of the parents, Sara Walsh, of Soulshine Photography (www.soulshine-photography.com) took the photographs and created the slideshow.
2. Ode to Flowers (you will need to click on the volume icon the hear the song)
The theme of the camps was: Pollinators and Their Habitats. The children learned all about flowers and their role and importance to pollinator animals. Part of the mission of Sing the World Green is for children to engage in an Earth service project so that they can feel empowered by making a positive contribution to the world. For our "service project," each camper planted two beautiful flowers in a pot to put in their yards or on their porches. So, even though we couldn't plant an actual pollinator garden (due to the pandemic), each student got the chance to create a little bit of pollinator-friendly habitat. As a way to integrate art and nature observation skills, the campers also drew and painted their flowers. Hopefully they have shared their beautiful art pieces with you! Finally, the children went on a nature walk in their yards and neighborhoods and took photos of beautiful flowers. It is their pictures that are included in this slideshow. The song, "Ode to Flowers," is a song that I wrote from the perspective of a bee.
3. Ode to Pollinators----The children also learned a lot about pollinator animals from three interactive presentations offered by the Butterfly Pavilion (butterflies.org). There was an overview presentation about all pollinators, one about bees, and one about monarch butterflies. The kids enjoyed these workshops and learned a lot. We created a "word wall" of all of the new words we learned about pollinator animals and habitats. They used these words and ideas as fodder for the verses that they wrote in pairs for this song. The tune is an American folk song, Polly Wolly Doodle, and the kids changed the lyrics. In the slideshow, the same kids who wrote the lyrics performed the verse.
4. Together We Can Change the World---At each camp, there is one song about making a difference/changing the world, etc. Sing the World Green wants to help kids get in touch with their power to make a difference, whether in small or large ways. This is a sweet song written by Mark Shepard (www.markshepard.com). A year ago, I was promoting my camp in a 5th grade classroom in Boulder, and they were singing this song to get ready for their graduation. I fell in love with its simplicity and beauty. Enjoy!
